Seemingly Simple Plastic Bins Provide a New Opportunity to Impact Communities in Washington, D.C.
Bozzuto and Goodwill of Greater Washington Partner on Smart Textile-Recycling Program
GREENBELT, MD – April 21, 2016 – On average, each American sends approximately 70 pounds of textiles to the dump each year. These goods not only could be donated and reused, but have the potential to help people find jobs and gain greater independence.
To combat this waste problem and celebrate Earth Day on April 22, Bozzuto has partnered with Goodwill of Greater Washington to host a Goodwill goBINTM at their corporate headquarters, as well as at three Bozzuto-managed properties in the Washington, D.C. area: Monroe Street Market, The Loree Grand, and The Ashby.
This pilot program is the first of its kind for Goodwill of Greater Washington. Bozzuto will be the first company in the country, outside of San Francisco where the concept was tested and developed, to receive these bins.
“Once again, Bozzuto has partnered with Goodwill of Greater Washington in an innovative way to support their donation efforts. One of Bozzuto’s core values is concern for the communities we touch, so it was a natural fit that we include our corporate headquarters as a site for this goBIN program,” said Peter Zadoretzky, Director of Sustainability for Bozzuto Management Company.
The goBINs, which wereinstalled on April 20,allow employees and residents to donate clothing, shoes, and accessories without leaving the building. These “self-notifying” bins include a sensor to remotely measure the fill-level, notifying Goodwill when it is full, ensuring the bins do not overflow, and reducing carbon emissions with optimal route planning.
“Sustainable business practices dictate our approach to every project, from inception through ongoing operations. From developing LEED-certified buildings, implementing recycling programs, to installing energy efficient appliances and electric vehicle charging stations, all of the Bozzuto communities work to promote green initiatives for sustainable living,” continues Zadoretzky.
“We are extremely grateful for Bozzuto’s continued support of Goodwill’s workforce development mission,” said Brendan Hurley, Chief Marketing Officer for Goodwill of Greater Washington. “Since our first regional donation drive with Bozzuto in 2014 our partnership has only grown; and this goBin pilot program is a testament to Bozzuto’s ongoing commitment to Goodwill, the environment, and our community.”
